I call on the Northern Territory Government to support Justine Davis MLA’s Gambling Harm Prevention Bill which will:
- make preventing gambling harm a clear purpose of gambling laws;
- introduce stronger conflicts of interests requirements for Commission members;
- ban harmful gambling inducements, including free bets, bonus bets and VIP treatment;
- strengthen protections for young people; and
- introduce stronger penalties for gambling operators that fail to meet their obligations
Australians deserve gambling laws that put people’s safety and wellbeing ahead of gambling industry profits.
Australians lose more to gambling than any other country in the world, but our current laws allow harmful industry practices to continue, and people are paying the price.
The Northern Territory has a particular responsibility to act. Because so many of Australia’s biggest online gambling companies are based here, the NT’s weak laws cause harm right across the country.
Let the NT Government know, as Territorians and Australians, expect gambling laws to protect people before the gambling industry.
