Future Generations Bill

Creating a new law to protect all of our futures

Over the next 3 years we will be working with our community members to create a community members Bill to protect future Generations. This new law will ensure a legal duty for our Northern Territory Government to consider the health and wellbeing of current and future generations when making decisions.

There are examples of these laws already in place in other countries, including the Well-being of Future Generations Act in Wales. Here in Australia there is work towards a Future generations bill federally, called the Duty of Care Act from Senator David Pocock and in other states and Territories.

We would love to hear about what you think is important for this Bill. You can answer some brief questions here: Future Generation Member's Bill survey.

Feel free to share the survey with your friends and family, and anyone else interested in participating in this initiative. The more feedback we get - the better!

What is a Future Generations Bill?

  1. Right now, in Australia, governments don’t have to consider people living in the future when they make a decision. A Future Generations Bill makes governments consider the impact their choices have on future generations.
  2. Governments often focus on short-term goals, even when their decisions will have long lasting effects, which can sometimes damage our long-term health and wellbeing. But when decisions will have long term effects, shouldn’t the government think about people in the future? When governments think about the long term, not just the short term, they make better decisions and can create a more stable and thriving society for generations to come. That’s what this bill is all about.
  3. Creating a ‘Future Generations Bill’ together means we get to decide what our future generations are protected from - whether that be poverty, climate change, crime, or anything else. What would you like to see protected by the Bill?
