It’s Time to Act on Gambling Harm

Australians lose more money to gambling per person than anyone else in the world; let’s do what we can to protect them. Protecting Territorian families from gambling harm isn't about stopping people from having fun, it's about keeping people safe.

Gambling can leave people with overwhelming debt, cause stress and anxiety and destroy relationships. Too often children and loved ones pay the price.

The NT is the quasi national regulator for online gambling in Australia because we have the weakest regulations and the lowest taxes. We can lead the way in protecting not only Territorians but all Australians.

But when I asked the Government to take stronger action to reduce gambling harm, they voted no.

That's why I am introducing a Bill to Parliament that will strengthen safeguards, reduce gambling harm and better protect families and communities.

The CLP made some changes to our gambling laws earlier this year but these changes fell far short of what Territorians have told us they want to see to tackle gambling harm.

My Bill will introduce stronger protections for young people, ban harmful inducements designed to encourage gambling, improve transparency, and hold the gambling industry accountable for the harm it causes.

Gambling should never come at the expense of a person's wellbeing, their family's financial security, or their future
