Housing and Cost of Living
We all deserve to live in a place where we can afford safe housing, healthcare, education, and healthy food.
My Commitment
I will work to make the NT a more affordable place to live.
What I Stand For
Housing
The cost of housing, whether you rent or own, is a key contributor to the cost-of-living stress we are all feeling.
- Long-term housing and homelessness planning: Develop a plan to increase the housing supply to meet our long-term needs so people can afford a place to live.
- Address the housing crisis: Hold a Housing Summit to look at ways to create more housing options including social, community, and affordable housing to address affordability and reduce homelessness.
- Affordable housing for first home buyers: Implement policies to make houses more affordable for first-time buyers, including grants, subsidies, and incentives.
- Public housing support: Improve support for public housing tenants to manage their tenancy obligations.
- Public housing stock: Better manage infrastructure, maintenance, and waiting lists.
- Community mediation: Establish a specialist community mediation program to address neighbourhood conflicts, particularly in relation to public housing issues.
- Fair rental laws: Review the Residential Tenancy Act to ensure renting is fair, safe, and secure. Bring our laws in line with the rest of Australia by controlling unreasonable rent increases, setting minimum standards for rentals, and ending 'no cause' evictions.
- Protecting landlords: Ensure landlords are protected with clear guidelines and support for maintaining their properties and managing tenancies.
- Discrimination protection: Protect renters from discrimination and establish an independent Residential Tenancies Bond Board.
Healthcare
- Affordable access: Work with the Federal government to increase access to bulk billing and make healthcare more affordable.
- Primary healthcare: Increase funding for community healthcare to increase early intervention capacity.
- Allied health services: Increase access to, and affordability of, allied health services.
- Mental health funding: Increase funding for, and accessibility of, mental health services.
- Hospitals: Review current hospital resourcing and management to address issues of increasing Code Yellows.
Affordable Healthy Food
- Reduce costs: Address the higher cost of food in the NT.
- Support local producers: Invest in and support local food producers, including farms, remote food projects, and community gardens.
Childcare Options
- Accessible services: Ensure high-quality, affordable, and accessible childcare services.
- Flexible options: Support flexible childcare options like part-time, drop-in, and extended hours to meet the needs of working parents.
- Regulatory standards: Strengthen standards for childcare centres and make evaluations public for informed choices.
- Parental support: Advocate for comprehensive parental leave and flexible work policies.
