Doing politics better

I keep hearing from people in our community that they are fed up with politics in the Territory. They don’t trust politicians. Their local members don’t listen or really understand what is important for them. When people want something fixed, they just keep finding closed doors. They’ve given up on politics.

Imagine if our elected representatives did their job: working together to solve problems and making decisions that will be best for the NT in the long term.

It doesn’t sound complicated - why aren’t we doing it?

My Commitment

I will work to make the political system more accountable and community-driven, turning parliament into a place of genuine collaboration that gets the job done, not one filled with political games and empty promises.

What I Stand For

  • Transparency: Make the political system visible and clear so people understand how it works and how they can be involved.
  • Community input: Establish clear pathways for community views to be heard, through parliament committee processes that seek community input, town hall meetings and citizen juries.
  • Evidence-based decisions: Base decisions on the best evidence and data, not on what will win votes.
  • Long-term impact: Evaluate what policies will mean for future generations.
  • Code of Behaviour: Establish a code of behaviour for all parliamentary representatives.
  • Effective use of time: Use parliamentary time for genuine debate and solving problems, rather than playing games.
  • Ban ‘Dorothy Dixers’: Stop the government from asking itself questions during Question Time, to allow more time for scrutiny by the opposition and independents.
  • Lobbyist register: Create a register so people can see who is trying to influence government decisions.
  • Public diaries: Make Ministers’ diaries public so community members can see who they are meeting with.
  • Independent Commission Against Corruption: Ensure it is doing its job properly to keep politicians accountable.
  • Scrutiny of new laws: Assess and discuss the impacts of proposed laws by hearing from experts and the public.
  • Transparency of political donations: Lower the threshold for when donations to politicians need to be reported.
  • Track election commitments: Create a public online register to track the delivery of election promises.
  • Independent statutory bodies: Ensure these bodies are truly independent, properly resourced, and free from political influence.
